I worked up some design ideas on paper that played off of the inspiration for their name…a World War II US poster that urged the Navy to well, ‘Let Em Have It’…as well as the overall style of the salon. Their style is a little industrial, but with a living greenery wall, along with other touches like original art. A cool and eclectic mix, for sure.

The old wall was prepped by sanding it down to remove bumps and texture…then re-coated with my favorite surface…Benjamin Moore chalkboard base tinted black. BTW- Don’t let them tell you that their premixed black is actually black…it’s a dark gray. They may look at you funny when you ask them to mix this up, but will be surprised by the outcome.

The design was then finished up and ‘installed’ on-site.

Behind their counters at both locations, they have large chalkboards for seasonal or rotating ads. These designs reflect some of the new items being carried at both locations. One of the most exciting things here was coming up with a different design for each store on the fly. I was handed three new products and that fact that they’re new.

This wall was about 18 feet long and 8 feet high – really massive. The design was worked out ahead of time and approved by the staff at CW. The branding at this dispensary emphasizes the medical nature of marijuana as opposed to its recreation, so they like to bring to mind things like apothecary and old pharmacy imagery. Black and white chalk and constructed lettering fits into their very nicely.

On site, laser levels were used to give perfectly straight main lines and lots of tools were improvised, like aluminum wire and pins for big compasses. This design is so big that I didn’t have a camera that could take a photo of it all at once! Lots of fun and great outcome.

The bride’s mother is a big fan of the chalkboard aesthetic and it was a real pleasure to work with her. Not only did she already own some neat ‘shabby chic’ chalkboards to work with and knew what her boards needed to say, but let me go nuts with how they might look. After a little collaborating on the design, I got to work.

We had four pieces for the shower, a fun little sign with a saying, a candy sign, a food menu for the shower, and a big welcome sign. Everything went off without a hitch and the bride’s mom had this to say:

Thank you so much for all the hard work you did on the Chalkboards. They were AMAZING!!!! You far exceeded our expectations!!!!

Now THAT feels really good. Here’s a look…

Teachers and students scribbled the lessons — multiplication tables, pilgrim history, how to be clean —  nearly 100 years ago. And they haven’t been touched since.

This week, contractors removing old chalkboards at Emerson High School in Oklahoma City made a startling discovery: Underneath them rested another set of chalkboards, untouched since 1917.

It comes in two varieties, tintable base, and ‘black’. The only issue is that the black is very gray! Frankly, it mimics the look of real slate very well. But people don’t really want that…they want a black, or a really deep gray.

So, opt for getting them to mix up some black from the tintable base as opposed to the black. If you like a more natural slate, then go for the black. I think most chalk artists will like th surface a lot.

I’ll be experimenting with spraying the stuff soon, as I am not thrilled by the texture I’ve gotten using a fine foam roller. I really dislike textured boards, so I’m working to eliminate that.
